In my free time I design flyers, organize and promote underground electronic music events aimed at empowering marginalized music producers, DJ’s and dancers in the Bay Area.
Dark Entries
Most recently I worked closely with Josh Cheon to create a chrome effect for one of Dark Entires latest releases by Jasmine Infiniti, “Bxtch Släp”.
Designing for an Underground Community
Rave culture is founded on self expression in a world where this type of freedom is withheld from the black, queer and trans pioneers of this way of life. To push this livelihood forward, I create flyers for dance music community events that teleport people into freer planes. I want people to feel as if they’ve been transported to a dimension unlike our own when they look at my flyers. The number one goal of my designs is to show them that the promoted event is one where they can enter a safe space that challenges the turmoil of real life momentarily. My designs pay respect to the history of underground dance music culture while showing love to those holding it down today.
My Process
When handing off the final design to clients, I usually hand off a few iterations to involve them in the creative process. Clients will frequently choose more than one color combination to give variation to their various avenues of promotion.
A Design Beyond Graphics
Apart from designing flyers for events, I am also responsible for managing, curating and planning a community dance event named Inmundo.
Project Management
When I organize an Inmundo event, I curate a lineup that isn’t solely white, male and cis gendered. The reason for that is, San Francisco already has platforms for these types of people to shine. My focus as a curator and manager for Inmundo is to give underprivileged artistic voices hope and inspiration. My goal is to pave a path for the generation that comes after, so that they can build platforms which challenge today's restrictive standards.
Philosophy
I passionately design effective and elegant products in tandem with people who have a unique vision, but don’t always have the means to execute it. Whether I’m asked to design a flyer for a community theatre event, or a late night rave that goes into the early morning, I always do so with respect for the audience in mind. Through my work I remind our community that we are progressively pushing towards a future filled with lush freakiness and purity. We are in this together, and my role as a designer is to energize those around me.
